Time is almost over to enter into Global Green USA's Green School Makeover Competition presented by Pureology. The competition ends on Mar 31, but don't let that deter you from entering! You still have a chance to win for your child's school.
So what are the actual benefits to having your child go to a green school? Is there really a difference?
More funds for student resources. When green upgrades are made to a school, water and energy costs can be reduced by as much as 40%. These savings can be channeled back into resources that directly benefit students, such as textbooks, computers and other essentials.
Reduced carbon footprint. We're all looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint individually, so why shouldn't your school? Greening a school significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming.
What and who is Global Green USA? Global Green USA helps to update some of the older schools that can't afford to make the renovations needed to provide a clean and safe environment for our kids.
So what are some things that can help your school become more green?
- Create a recycling program
- Conduct an energy audit to see how the school can conserve energy.
- Switch to green cleaning products.
- Install energy efficient light bulbs.
- Replace outdated floors and carpeting, with new non-toxic material.
- Install solar shades to improve natural lighting in classrooms.
- Use sustainable building material, such as bamboo flooring and recycled gym mats.
Now there are a few things that you can do yourself in that list. Bring up making a recycling program during your next PTA meeting. Ask about energy efficient light bulbs, they're actually pretty affordable. Last ask your principal to look into green cleaning products. The rest of the options are obviously a bit harder, but can always be brought up in the next meetings with the superintendent.
