Reader's Nook - COWS! Book Review

COWS!
BY MARTIN D ROTHERY

So I needed to get some reading done and I reached for Cows! I couldn't sleep afterwards though because I was too afraid the cows would get me. No I didn't type that wrong...really the cows will get me! They're coming for us all as we sit there oblivious to there dastardly deeds. I mean letting loose all that methane gas and putting all of humankind in danger, well that's some heavy stuff. Okay wait, I think I'm getting ahead of myself here. You see Martin D Rothery explains it all so nicely in his book, "Cows!". In this quirky funny book he exposes that those pretty docile animals that do nothing but chew cud all day are really evil masterminds. Yup, it's all there in that one tiny unassuming book. Why those cows even try to trick you with that sweet looking face on the cover. Don't let them fool you like they did me!

Cows! is a really well written book that is fun for all ages. My niece read it and laughed, but you know I laughed when I read it to. Who would ever think that cows could be such menaces. They can control us with telepathy and make us do horrible things for them. Seriously how scary would that be? There is no telling what those cows would do to us. Well, unless you don't have much a brain then you'll be safe. Yup, for those individuals that we "normal" folk call a little dimwitted or slow, well they're quite safe. The cows can't control them and well its left to people like them and Jimmy Tatley. Jimmy is a 14yr old boy who isn't necessarily book smart, well he isn't really smart at all. He is great with animals though, such as his dog Flossy. Jimmy wakes up one morning to complete silence which is obviously pretty odd. He heads over to Farmer Kens house and finds both Farmer Ken and his wife in bed...mooing. Yup! That's right mooing! There is more but really I don't want to spoil it for you.

Don't you want to head out right now and get this book? Or maybe you'd rather stay in and order it online like at Amazon.com. You can get the kindle version there for a low, low price of $4.67! Seriously that's really inexpensive especially for a book that is vital to your safety! Just be careful though because I'm sure the cows don't want you to have this book. Why it may cause an uprising, and well what will you do then?

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Nordic Naturals® Back-to-School Promotion

I'm glad that I'll be able to tell you guys about a great promotion! Its from Nordic Naturals and Healthy Child Healthy World organization. It isn't everyday that one comes around and really grabs my attention. With the way the world is now, things are way different for our children, nieces, nephews, etc. While I don't have children of my own I do have 9 nephews and 1 niece, 4 of whom I care for. It can be a dangerous world out there so having a nice clean environment for them to come home to is essential. I have done everything that I can to make sure my home is safe for them. But that's not all though it isn't just about keeping your home safe, but their bodies and minds as well. Having great healthy food and fun activities will help your child stay happy and fulfilled.

So how do I make sure my home is safe for the kids? It's not just about buying organic items to use around the home. I read every label that crosses my door, seriously. While cleaning products is a big one, you also have to look deeper than that. Shampoos, soaps, lotions...they have chemicals in them as well. You may not even think about that, but you should. Like did you know, triclosan, an ingredient commonly used in antibacterial products, has been linked to negative environmental and health impacts. Yup that anti-bacterial soap has chemicals in it too! Go to www.healthychild.org for more information on what steps to take to make sure your home is safe for your children.

Staying on subject with chemicals existing in todays world. Did you know that more than 80,000 chemicals, most of which did not exist fifty years ago, are registered for use in commerce in the United States, and approximately 700 new ones are introduced every year. These chemicals are used in everyday items such as food, shampoo, toys, furniture, electronics, household cleaners, and lawn care products, to name just a few. The effects of most of these chemicals on human health are unknown. Of these high-volume chemicals, only 43% have been tested for potential human toxicity, and only 7% have been studied for their possible effects on child development. Even fewer have been tested for their health effects when they interact with one another. What is this doing to our kids? For the most part, we don’t really know. It’s largely an unregulated experiment—and our children are the canaries in the coalmine.

That's why Nordic Naturals will donate a portion of proceeds from selected Nordic Naturals children’s products to Healthy Child Healthy World during its Back-to-School promotion, which will run from August 1st through October 31st. One dollar of every bottle sold of the following products will be donated to Healthy Child Healthy World:

  • Nordic Berries™ – chewy, sweet-and-sour multivitamins provide 100% of the daily value of the most essential nutrients
  • Nordic Omega-3 Gummies™ – easy-to-chew, omega-3 tangerine treats for ages 2+
  • Children’s DHA™ – chewable, strawberry-flavored omega-3s support brain and visual function for ages 3+
  • Baby’s DHA – omega-3s for babies 5-35 lbs. with a measured dropper for easy addition to formula or food

So while you're buying vitamins to keep your child happy and healthy, you'll be helping them to help other children. It's a great product and brand to get in back of, so what are you waiting for? Look below for more information about Healthy Child Healthy World and Nordic Naturals. There are also links for you to visit, and hopefully make a purchase. Also, please follow both Nordic Naturals and Healthy Child Healthy World on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Food For Thought: Banana Bread

Banana Bread - Yummy!

So the last time I made banana bread I didn't show you guys all the steps. Well I'm back with some more banana bread and it was yummy! First off I didn't use any nuts because I didn't have any on hand. Plus they aren't the cheapest things to buy in the store with like $6 for a tiny bag. Yea, I'll pass.

I used a recipe I found online and added or subtracted to suit my tastes. Here is the recipe below as it was online.

Banana Bread:

  • 3 to 4 bananas (ripened)
  • 1/3 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda (not baking powder!)
  • 1 1/2 cup of flour
  • pinch of salt

It said that using frozen bananas was just fine and because I got over ripened ones they went into the freezer. I used 4 large sized bananas for my bread and it ended up fantastic! It was overwhelmingly banana-ish! Yea that's a word...okay maybe not but it should be. I grabbed my handy dandy potato smasher and went to work on my frozen but thawed bananas. I worked out some frustrations onto those poor delicious bananas, but in the end all was good with the world. I added all the other ingredients and mixed it all on low speed just to get as much lumps out. Yes bananas are lumpy but I can tell the difference between bananas and clumpy flour, can't you?

Anyway, after it was mixed thoroughly I poured into a sprayed pan - I use Baker's Joy btw. That stuff is awesomeness in a can and is always used in my house. I popped that sucker into the oven at 350 and let it sit there for about an hour. It felt like forever and the whole household was crying about their stomachs aching for banana bread. They had just eaten dinner, not like they really needed to be filled with sugar, right? Once it was done I had to sadly tell the kids that it needed time to cool down, you'd think I told them that Santa wasn't real. Which if anyone asks he is real and doesn't reside in my closet, even though presents end up there sometimes.

Once the bread was cool enough I slowly cut it as the kids watched with tongues hanging out. It was pretty unnerving and I was just hoping I'd make it with all my limbs. The bread was finally all divided and the kids munched away to their hearts content. It was fantastic and we all loved it, I now have more bananas freezing in the garage waiting for the next time I feel like some banana bread - still sans nuts.

So what homemade goodies have you made lately? I'd love to hear about it so feel free to share it with me! :D Also if you make the banana bread I'd love to see the results!

Beauty Corner Review: Essie "Stroke of Brilliance"

ESSIE LUXEFFECTS
"STROKE OF BRILLIANCE"

So I have been really grateful to have joined Klout because it has gotten me some great perks for sharing content. Yup thats right and for sharing all my beauty products and polish I was rewarded with a polish of my own. This is the second Essie polish that I've gotten through Klout, the first being "Mojito Madness". Essie polishes are great and always go on easily and smooth, Luxeffects is no different. It has a great amount of glitter, but not too much, so you can pick and choose. Stroke of Brilliance is a clear polish with blue hex and circle glitter. You can use a little or go crazy and pile it on. It dried super quick and the more I layered the better it looked. Seriously, you guys need this polish! It was so much fun to play with and am so glad I was able to get one.

I sat at my desk wondering what I'd do with it and saw my Nox polish, "Twilight". Yup fantastic! They would definitely go great together and the blue has a grey-ish undertone to help highlight the gray. So while looking at the combo it hit me...it looks like a shattered mirror! So here it is...my Shattered Mirror Mani!

First I grabbed my bottle of Nox's Twilight, its a nice creamy gray. I put that down first and then got bottle of Julep's Meryl and painted the tips. Painting my tips helped to make the glitter more opaque. I didn't get a picture of my tips painted in Meryl for some strange reason. Don't ask me why but I forgot, doh! Anyway I swiped my nail once with very little of Essie's Stroke of Brilliance. I then added more half way up and then a bit more at the tip. This gave the illusion of pieces "falling" and it was exactly what I was going for.

Essie goes for about $7 dollars at most Targets so they're super affordable and right in your neighborhood! I've got many in my arsenal and its only growing. If you haven't already checked Essie polishes out I don't know what you're waiting for. They're durable, go on easily, dry quickly, and are affordable. They're just great all around polishes!

If you were able to get this Klout perk, I'd love to see it! Please feel free to share those pictures guys! Head over to my Facebook page and post them there. I'll be waiting!

DISCLOSURE: I was given a free product because I'm a Klout influencer. I am under no obligation to receive the "sample" or talk about this company. I get no additional benefits for talking about the product or company.
